About Me

THE PURPOSE OF EXISTENTIAL COUNSELING IS...

Existential counseling involves the process of finding individual meaning and value in life and can support your unique expression of purpose in the world. Anxiety, fear, apathy, depression, frustration, loneliness, insecurity, meaninglessness, anger, unresolved grief, illness, and chronic conflict – this is human suffering.

To transition through the seasons of one’s life with its ever-changing landscape of joys and sorrows, grief, and loss with grace, dignity and respect.  To care for ourselves and the environment we live in, to connect with our community, and to face our own mortality in a state of serenity – this is wholeness.

To move through our suffering towards wholeness – this is our reason for existential counseling.

Together we address the existential questions using an integrative approach that includes Jungian psychology, existential analysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, logotherapy, family systems, and depth psychology.

You are not alone if you are seeking support in your current life circumstances or looking for guidance exploring an inner calling, career change, relationship difficulties, reconnection to spirituality, or a renewed sense of meaning and purpose. I look forward to hearing from you and supporting you on your journey!

THE EXISTENTIAL QUESTIONS

  • What do I experience as inner feeling throughout the day?
  • How do I cope with the reality of my own mortality and that of others?
  • How do I experience instability and change in people, places, and things around me?

WHAT IS MY INNER STATE OF BEING?

Your inner state of being refers to your inner environment which includes mood, attitude, feelings, and thoughts.

We often overlook the value of maintaining our inner state as we become absorbed by the day-to-day responsibilities and challenges.  As a result, many of the negative emotions such as anger, fear, apathy, and depression arise.  They are reminders that possibly the most valuable thing we have is our inner state of being.

This inner state is something that one feels subject to but seldom in control of. However, there is much you can do to experience an inner state of your choice throughout the day regardless of situations and circumstances. For example, you can choose to be the calm within the storm so that you respond with freedom and creativity to life’s demands and challenges. In other words, you can choose how you feel inside and how you express yourself outwardly. This is done, not  artificially, but rather from a place of impeccable authenticity with determination and power.

ABOUT ME

Marc Adams, LMSW, MBA

Marc has always been attracted to learning new ways of seeing and approaching life's many situations and challenges. Much like Carl Jung, Marc grew up with a father who was a minister providing access to deep psychological material and spiritual traditions from a very early age. Marc continued to be exposed to new perspectives by immersing himself into many fields of study, philosophies, different cultures, and a variety of living and work environments including living abroad. These experiences provided a backdrop towards developing  particular areas of interest including Jungian psychology, Sufi traditions, Non-duality and Fourth Way teachings. Many of the teachings derive from various sources including C.G. Jung, M. Nicoll, B. Gibson, G.I. Gurdjieff, I. Shah, J. Krishnamurti, R. Spira among others. These new perspectives served as portals to opening a new way of being and experiencing.

Marc’s professional journey has included working in the volatile banking industry for over 28 years before acquiring a psychotherapy license while navigating major life transitions. He also dedicated years to learning Flamenco guitar, dancing focusing on Argentine tango, and intensive study abroad programs to gain fluency in multiple languages. One key element that has remained constant throughout the years has been a magnetic attraction to inner work and, ultimately, the desire to partner with others in facilitating their journey to experience new perspectives and new ways of being.

Additionally, Marc is a co-founder of Creative Depth, an organization dedicated to supporting clinicians in providing greater depth and meaning to the therapeutic process. Marc also serves as a board member of Charlotte Friends of Jung non-profit organization.  This interest and expertise in Jungian psychology also informs Marc's therapeutic approach.

INTEGRATED APPROACH

MY APPROACH

I use an integrated approach that allows for a spontaneous and creative interaction and exploration of your concerns and difficulties during our work together. My approach is grounded in fundamental therapeutic modalities that include depth psychology, Jungian principles, existential analysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, logotherapy, family systems, creative expression, and embodied practices. Our sessions may include reviewing dreams, tapping into creative aspects that have been dormant, being present to shadow aspects, discerning a path for navigating the practical issues in life, and learning new skills and insights for managing interpersonal relationships. We will also investigate what may be calling you to bring more meaning and purpose in your life while addressing what may be obstructing that calling.

I am a strong believer that to have a balanced and healthy psychological state of being, we need to have balance in the roles we play in life: work, family, personal time with creative expression. There is a strong correlation between having more creative expression in all your roles and experiencing a more pleasant and joyful inner state of being.

Why work with dreams?

Dream work serves as an effective portal into unconscious material that bypasses the ego defenses to bring more consciousness to old patterns of behavior and emotional feeling tones.
